World Champions Training Local Colombian Kids in BJJ
At BJJ Camp XP, we believe that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is more than a sport—it’s a tool for personal transformation. Our mission has always been to share the art of Jiu-Jitsu, not just with our participants but also with the local communities that make our camps possible. One of our most rewarding initiatives has been partnering with Calima Combat, a Jiu-Jitsu school in Darien, Colombia, to offer local kids an extraordinary opportunity: training alongside world champions.
From Humble Beginnings to Transforming Lives
When we first started BJJ Camp XP in 2022, we were introduced to Professor Robert Hurtado, the visionary behind Calima Combat. At that time, Robert was just starting out, running a small program in a fitness center in Darien, a quiet town near Calima Lake. His group included only a handful of adults and a few children—no more than eight students in total.
Robert, a schoolteacher and psychologist, had discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu a few years earlier. At the time, he was a brown belt with limited training options in Darien. He often had to travel to advance in rank, as there were no black belts in the area. Yet his dedication to BJJ and his community was unwavering.
Robert’s mission was clear: to spread the love of Jiu-Jitsu in Darien and provide children with a positive outlet to grow, develop discipline, and build confidence. His passion resonated with us immediately. From that first meeting, we made a promise:
No local from Darien would ever be charged to train with us at BJJ Camp XP.
Why This Initiative Matters
For many families in Darien, access to Jiu-Jitsu training can be challenging. Resources like Gis, No-Gi sets, and even transportation to training facilities are often out of reach. That’s why this partnership is about more than just teaching techniques—it’s about creating opportunities.
At every camp, we encourage our participants to connect with the locals. Whether it’s sharing advice, donating equipment, or simply rolling together, these interactions have made a lasting impact. Over the years, we’ve seen firsthand how Jiu-Jitsu can transform lives, especially for young athletes.
Connecting Kids with World Champions
Fast forward to today, and the transformation in Darien has been nothing short of inspiring. Professor Robert now runs his own dedicated space for Calima Combat, and the children’s program has grown from just a few students to over 25.
What made our most recent camp so special was the chance to bring these young athletes face-to-face with their heroes: Anderson Munis and Giulia Gregorut. These world-class instructors headlined the camp, and we knew we had to involve the local kids in this extraordinary opportunity.
With the help of Robert, the parents, and a local transportation company, we arranged for the kids to join us at our training facility. Nestled by the shores of Calima Lake, this space—a former tennis court in a private housing complex—offered the perfect setting. For many of these children, it was their first time experiencing the lake’s beauty up close, as much of the land near the lake is privately owned.
A Day to Remember
The day was filled with excitement as the kids trained alongside Anderson and Giulia. Watching their faces light up as they learned new techniques and received personal guidance from their heroes was nothing short of magical.
Giulia’s ability to connect with the kids was extraordinary. Her teaching style kept them engaged and excited, and her genuine care for their progress was evident in every interaction. Anderson’s humble and encouraging demeanor left a lasting impression. He took the time to answer their questions, give advice, and even share stories about his own journey in Jiu-Jitsu.
Beyond the mats, the kids played, laughed, and bonded with the world champions. They left that day not only with new skills but with memories and inspiration that will stay with them forever.
Building Bridges for the Future
Our ultimate goal for these kids extends far beyond the training sessions. We want to create bridges that connect them to opportunities they might not otherwise have access to.
For some, this might mean competing on an international stage or securing sponsorships. For others, it might mean finding career paths within Jiu-Jitsu, whether as athletes, coaches, or even contributors to events like BJJ Camp XP.
One day, we hope to see a world champion emerge from Darien—a testament to the transformative power of hard work, discipline, and community support.
The Growth of Calima Combat
Since we began this journey, the impact of Calima Combat has been remarkable. What started as a small group in a fitness center has blossomed into a thriving community. Robert’s dedication and leadership have created a safe and supportive space where kids can develop not just as athletes but as individuals.
By fostering values like respect, discipline, and perseverance, Robert is changing lives—one roll at a time.
